ARA Literacy Conference: the 45th Annual but my 1st

Hello, my name is Susan Bishop. I teach at Northside High School in Fort Smith, Arkansas. This is my first time to attend the ARA Literacy Conference.

One reason I am glad I was able to attend this conference is that my love of teaching reading has been renewed. Many of my students struggle with reading or wanting to read, and I need lots of tools and ideas to help them. These past two days have given me a plethora of strategies to use with my students.

Another reason this conference has been valuable is that I have gotten to know my colleagues better. We learned more about each other on the early-morning car ride to Little Rock on Thursday. We also had fun eating at  Bruno's Little Italy Thursday night.

Even though this is my first Arkansas Reading Association Literary Conference, I hope it is not my last!

What an exciting time these two days have been while attending ARA's 45th Annual Literacy Conference!  This event has become an annual pilgrimage of sorts, traveling, seeing, greeting, learning, networking, developing, While at the conference, one is guaranteed to meet and greet with some of the most preeminent forerunners of literacy across our nation.  Meeting authors remains a favorite of mine.  For instance, yesterday, I dropped in on a book talk by Jonathan Friesen, attended Danny Brassel's motivational keynote, sat in on Teamwork authors session with Monique Wild and Amanda Mayeaux, and the finished up my day meeting with authors who participated in this past year's ARA Book Club.  Fun!  Then, last evening, sitting at our dinner table was Louis Sachar!  Where else but right here at ARA could this happen?  Another favorite occurrence at the conference is meeting the people.  Matching a face with a voice I "hear" via emails and comments on Facebook rounds just makes these friends more real!  For instance, yesterday during book club, meeting some of the participants was just a highlight!  We had (literally) spent hours together on Facebook book club meetings so to sit and chat "live" was fun!  For all the above reasons...and more...my goal remains to continually encourage my friends and peers to attend this conference.  With declining numbers, this need to share stays on forefront, for such events as these where teachers may meet the authors they respect, where attendees engage with other like-minded peers who are full of positive experiences to share are needed across our state, and where ever-learning literacy leaders inspire another...such events as these are just vital.
